Back in 2012, Netflix and Disney signed an agreement that would make Netflix the exclusive U.S. subscription service for first-run live acction and animated features from Walt Disney. Fast forward to 2016, that deal is about to bear fruit as Netflix has announced that Disney’s catalogue will be hitting the service by September.
So what does this mean for Netflix? Well, come September, Disney animations and featured films will be available for streaming on Netflix. While some of Disney’s offerings such as Mulan and Hercules are already available on the service, the rest of Disney’s catalogue will also be available starting from September.
The deal isn’t limited to just Disney-created content of course. The deal also covers other Disney-owned companies such as Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar. Yes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars will most likely be available on Netflix as well.
But before you get too excited, do note that this announcement is probably focused on the U.S. side of the service. Netflix hasn’t mentioned anything about Disney catalogue being made available outside the U.S. so it is entirely possible that we here in Malaysia won’t be getting it. Also, seeing as Netflix has been busy clamping down on VPNs as of late, only time will tell if we will have access to Disney content on Netflix as well.
