Voice over WiFi can be a rather useful when it comes to poor cell reception areas, and Digi has quietly enabled that service today, reported by local tech site Soyacincau.com, users who are using iPhone 5C and above should receive a carrier update that enables the WiFi Calling option in the Settings app. Earlier this year, Digi had launched VoLTE (Voice over LTE) with support for iPhones, followed by the Galaxy S7 edge and Huawei’s latest flagship devices.
The timing is right for the launch of VoWiFi, as the telco has announced in the beginning of the year to improve its network coverage this year by riding the 900MHz spectrum and activating VoWiFi meanwhile. VoWiFi will help to solve coverage issues if the phone is connected to a Internet enabled WiFi network, which even without a cellular signal or roaming, users are able to make voice calls via WiFi on the Digi network.
Currently, Digi and U Mobile are the only telcos in Malaysia to have fully implement both VoLTE and VoWiFi calling technology on their networks. To enable VoWiFi on your iPhone, simply launch the Settings app, go to Phone -> WiFi Calling -> On.
