Delphi will test out a self-driving taxi service in Singapore

Singapore will be playing host to a self-driving vehicle pilot program soon, but unlike various other self-driving vehicle test, Singapore’s test will allow almost everyone to try it out, as the country will be playing host to a self-driving taxi service pilot program.

Automotive technology parts supplier Delphi has announced that it will be entering a partnership with the Singapore government to start a pilot program for an on-demand autonomous taxi service. This pilot program will see Delphi deploy six autonomous cars which will travel along a four0mile route in a business park on the western edge of the city. The service is expect to be similar to other ride-hailing services like Lyft and Uber.

This pilot program is expect to run for three years with the first year being dedicated to laying out the technological groundwork with the self-driving vehicles being deployed in the second year. Passengers will be chosen to test the system from a cross-section of the Singapore population. Should the program produces favourable results, Singapore and Delphi are looking to transition the program into a fully operational service by 2022.
