BlackBerry Priv getting Marshmallow rollout next month

As we all know, the BlackBerry Priv was probably a sink or swim decision for BlackBerry, moving from their traditional homegrown operating systems such as BlackBerry 10 and BBOS to the more popular and mainstream Android. The company did that while largely maintaining the design aesthetics of previous BlackBerry handsets, including its legacy QWERTY keyboard. While many may think that the BlackBerry Priv will turn many heads, it turns out that BlackBerry performed underpar, selling less handsets than expected, according to the company’s Q4 2015 report recently. We’re thinking that the poor performance is due to the price point of the Priv, alongside other BlackBerry phones, which are in the pricey spectrum.

Nevertheless, on a lighter note, Marshmallow will be heading to BlackBerry Priv devices next month. This news comes from within the company. Michael Clewley, the director of Handheld Software Product and Management has announced on Twitter, followed by assuring the Twitter-verse that it isn’t an April Fools’ joke, just in case:

“I’d talk about a #PRIV Marshmallow beta today but given #AprilFools you might not believe me! Gonna have to wait for next week”

This is good news for those who have been patiently, or impatiently waiting, but the Marshmallow rollout in May will mean that consumers have to wait for another month, on top of the fact that the Priv was released back in November last year, and considering the fact that flagship spec-ed smartphones grow obsolete in a flash nowadays, a six month wait for consumers doesn’t look too good on BlackBerry’s failing portfolio. Well, just be content that Marshmallow is indeed arriving to the BlackBerry Priv. Till then, stay tuned!
