Apple and the FBI returns to Congress to debate encryption

The iPhone saga may be over, but that doesn’t mean that the debate over encryption is over. For the second time, both Apple and the FBI will be appearing in front of a congressional commitee to debate about encryption.

As many of you may remember, Apple and the FBI have appeared before Congress in March to debate over the necessity of building a backdoor into iOS. Seeing as the iPhone 5C that started this whole chain of events has been cracked, the upcoming debate that will be held in Congress will be focused solely on encryption. Titled ‘Deciphering the Debate Over Encryption: Industry and Law Enforcement Perspectives’, the debate will be led by FBI Executive Assistant Director for Science and Technology Amy Hess and Apple general counsel Bruce Sewell.

Unlike the first hearing, third parties are also expected to appear for the encryption debate. Those that are scheduled to appear include security and cryptography researcher Matthew Blaze, MIT researcher Daniel Weitzner, RSA president Amit Yoran, and law enforcement representatives from New York, Indiana and the National Sheriff’s Association.
