Ambient Display mode might be coming in the new Android O

XDA Developers have dug into the APK of the Pixel and Nexus devices and found out that Google might be working on an always on feature, similar to what we see on the Samsung S8. In the latest Android O Developer Preview, the SystemUIGoogle.APK ( the process that tells your phone how the interface is going to look like) was decompiled and a string of code showed with a “doze” function.

Doze refers to the Ambient Display, not to the confused with the feature that was added to Android Marshmallow that would help you save battery. This feature will basically wake your phone but, display vital information like notifications or missed calls in a black and white screen without any background. It would be a nice feature to have especially for those of us who work a desk job, as we could easily glance at our phones to check if there are important notifications that come in.

Seeing as how this feature was found in the developer’s preview of the new Android OS, it might not even make it to the official release. Google might let us try the feature in the developer’s preview but might release it as a patch after the official release of Android O.
