Amazon will restore Fire OS encryption support in spring

Last week, it was widely reported that Amazon has decided to remove Fire OS’ encryption support. Predictably, a huge outcry rose from it. Now, Amazon is backtracking as they will be re-implementing full disk encryption to Fire OS 5 in a software update “coming in spring”.

Amazon’s decision to remove encryption from its latest version of Fire OS was ill-received by its users. The negative reaction to Amazon removing encryption support can be attributed to the fact that currently, Apple and the FBI are undergoing a legal battle surrounding encryption. When asked as to why Amazon removed encryption support in the first place, the company said that encryption was an “enterprise feature” that “consumers werem’t using.”

While the outrage surrounding Amazon’s removal of encryption from Fire OS was reported on only last week, Amazon has been removing encryption support since last year on its Fire tablets. With Amazon backtracking on its decision to remove encryption support, it is safe to say that future Fire tablets will have encryption support by default.
