When you hear a brand called Ninetology in the smartphone market, you will most probably think that it is some kind of overseas or ‘china brand’ smartphone, you’re so WRONG if you seriously think that way, brace yourselves as Ninetology is a Malaysian company that manufactures smartphones, and they claimed to have the 2nd largest smartphone market share in Malaysia. Now, the U9 series have landed and is intended to compete with flagship smartphones in the market with its exceptional low price and killer hardware specifications.

In this post, we take a look at the Ninetology U9X1 and Samsung Galaxy Mega, which both were loaned to us for review by Ninetology Malaysia. Check out our short film below.

Under their hood

We know you readers are mostly ‘spec-cy’ people, both Ninetology U9X1 and Samsung Galaxy Mega has the following specifications:

Looking at the spec sheet alone, you will immediately notice that the Galaxy Mega has advantage in the connectivity part, however the U9X1 supports Dual 3G SIM card slots, which we find it quite unique as most dual SIM smartphones only have one 3G slot and the other 2G.

Display and Software

The display on both devices have the same resolution even though with different panels, color saturation and pixel density is better on the U9X1 due to the smaller screen size and it’s Super AMOLED HD panel. The Galaxy Mega on the other hand has a larger screen and therefore has a lower pixel density, however we still find it a joy to look at the Mega 6.3 inch screen.

Both U9X1 and Galaxy Mega runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, although on different revisions at 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 respectively, they don’t have much differences. The U9X1 comes with a stock Android skin with very minimal customizations and the Galaxy Megacomes preloaded with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. People who like the stock Android experience will definitely love the U9X1.

Both the U9X1 and Galaxy Mega 6.3’s camera is acceptable, Check out the sample shots below judge it by yourselves. We do, however, face some issues with the U9X1’s auto-focus at times, hopefully that can be resolved via a software update.

Performance and Benchmarks

Here’s where things start to get interesting, and before you jump to your conclusions, we have to say that even though theGalaxy Mega 6.3 scores higher in benchmarks, it isn’t necessary fast in our day to day usage, as we always mention in our reviews, never trust benchmarks scores but your own instincts on how fast the phone is. During our tests, we find that the U9X1 fares better usage scores compared to the Galaxy Mega due to its stock Android skin, TouchWiz seriously slows down the Android experience as you can also refer back to our Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 review back then. Still, we let you have a look at the benchmarks on Quadrant and Antutu in both devices.

We love every gadgets that come to our labs, the U9X1 is no exception, the performance, camera, display and dual 3G standby SIM feature is what we really love about the U9X1, there’s no other smartphone in the market that is able to offer as much as Ninetology at the price of RM1099. We do also spare some love for the Galaxy Mega, which we rate it at a high 4 out of 5 stars in our review, it has a MEGA screen, LTE connectivity and TouchWiz enhances the Android experience. We have no winners over here, both phones have their own selling points. So, here’s our conclusion.

We recommend the U9X1 if:

+ You are looking for a powerful dual SIM smartphone with affordable price tag
+ You need a phone that is small and a beautiful display
+ You need a phone that has good camera performance

We recommend the Galaxy Mega if:

+ You are already a phablet user
+ You want to enjoy software features from Samsung
+ You are already attached to the Samsung ecosystem

We rate the Ninetology U9X1 at 3.5 out of 5 stars. And finally, don’t forget to support us by clicking on the banner below to subscribe to Ninetology’s newsletters, doing so will win you e-vouchers or a Ninetology smartphone if you’re lucky!
