The Acer Iconia B1 is a budget tablet aimed at budget conscious consumers. While being a budget tablet, it doesn’t mean that everything on it comes with a compromise. You get to have a dual core processor, microSD card expansion, WiFI 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 7 inch 1024×600 LCD screen which doesn’t look too bad. The tablet also adopts Acer’s laptop design language and it is very lightweight at 320 grams. The Iconia B1 comes with Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 without much skin customizations, that means the tablet should be able to upgrade to 4.2.2 without much issues. Overall, we are very satisfied with the performance of this little budget tablet, especially with the smoothness of it’s user interface and it takes on most 3D games without much hesitation.

How does the Acer Iconia B1 score in our tests? Note that the scores are given based on budget tablets.

Hardware 4/5

Cheap tablets doesn’t mean you need to have a lot of compromises, the Iconia B1 provides the latest Bluetooth 4.0, Built-in GPS, WiFi B/G/N, Dual core processor under it’s hood. It doesn’t score the full marks due to it’s low 8GB internal memory, which only translates into 5GB of storage memory after powering up the device and it means you will not be able to store much applications that require high memory usage.

Software 5/5

We’re giving the software part of the Iconia B1 full points, due to the fact that it ships with Jelly Bean 4.1.2, even though it’s not the latest, but it is better than shipping it with Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0. Furthermore, the Iconia B1 does not have much bloatware installed and kept most of the Android interface untouched. One plus thing is that Acer provides a cloud service – AcerCloud, which allows you to access files on your PC or other devices with AcerCloud installed on the go.

Gaming 3.5/5

Gaming on this tablet is a pleasure. Even though it can handle most popular games and even those graphic intensive ones, some games such as Asphalt 7 cannot be played on the tablet due to the low 512MB of RAM.

Performance 4/5

Performance is considered decent for a budget tablet, even though it may be the best in class performance in the budget tabletsegment, the low 512MB ram slows down the tablet and cause multitasking on it a pain on some occasions.

Usability 3/5

You will certainly enjoy using the tablet while at home or sitting in a café with it’s lightweight body and decent screen brightness. However, the tablet is totally useless under direct sunlight and has very bad screen viewing angles; furthermore, the VGA front facing camera takes greasy photos and videos which even a Nokia 6600 can beat it even though it is a 10 year old hardware. The speaker on the Iconia B1 is loud however the sound greatly reduces when you put the tablet on a flat surface.

Battery Life 2.5/5

Due to its small 2710mah, the Acer Iconia B1 disappoints a little with its mediocre battery life, continuous gaming will last you about 2-3 hours, long term web surfing lasts you around 6-7 hours. In mixed usage, you are able to get around 13-14 hours a day, which is very similar to high end Android smartphones, but we’re not going to compare with those as tablets are meant to have longer battery life than smartphones.

Pricing 5/5

With so many features, you will assume that this should be around RM500-RM600. But NO, at RM399, this is the best budgettablet you can get at the moment with recognized manufacturer warranty and technical support. You may check and they’re providing free shipping to your doorstep as long as you reside in Malaysia.

We gave the Acer Iconia B1 an average rating of 4.5/5.
